Back Office Overview

The Back Office module handles post-trade processing, regulatory obligations, and operational reporting for NEM market participants. It covers the full lifecycle from trade settlement through to regulatory compliance, environmental obligation tracking, and network operations management.

Unlike the Front Office (market monitoring) and Middle Office (trading and risk), the Back Office is concerned with obligations — things that must be done accurately and on time to meet NEM Rules requirements.

Settlement

AEMO settlement statement ingestion and reconciliation. PRELIM → FINAL → R1–R4 run tracking, true-up analysis, prudential deposit management, dispute workflow, and GL journal generation.

Compliance & Regulatory

NER obligations calendar, AER enforcement register monitoring, AEMC rule change tracker, AEMO procedures library. Automated compliance due date alerts.

Environmental & LGCs

Large-scale Generation Certificate (LGC) registry, Safeguard Mechanism reporting, carbon emissions tracking, emissions intensity benchmarks, and ACCU spot prices.

Network Operations

AEMO outage management system integration, active constraint sets, DER management, network asset registry, and planned outage scheduling.

Reporting

AI-generated daily market summary reports, dashboard snapshot exports, data quality report (pipeline health and data completeness), and regulatory submission packs.

The NEM settlement process follows a defined sequence of runs:

RunNameTimingDescription
PRELIMPreliminaryT+2 business daysFirst estimate with provisional data
FINALFinalT+18 business daysFinal settlement with all metering data
R1Revised Run 1T+3 monthsFirst revision (metering corrections)
R2Revised Run 2T+6 monthsSecond revision
R3Revised Run 3T+9 monthsThird revision
R4Revised Run 4T+12 monthsFinal revision (closes settlement)

Energy Copilot ingests AEMO settlement statements for each run and automatically computes the true-up: how much did each run differ from the previous?

The Back Office Compliance module tracks obligations across:

  • Market (NEM Rules): offer compliance, rebid reason codes, market settlement payment timelines
  • Retail: mandatory reporting to AER (retail performance data)
  • Network: outage notifications, constraint compliance
  • Environmental: RET compliance (LGC surrender), Safeguard Mechanism reporting
  • Safety: ESV/DNSP electrical incident reporting (for DNSP participants)
